چکیده

We study a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion system which describes an isothermal autocatalytic chemical reaction involving both a quadratic (A + B → 2B) and a cubic (A+ 2B → 3B) autocatalysis. The parameters of this system are the ratio D = DB/DA of the diffusion constants of the reactant A and the autocatalyst B, and the relative activity k of the cubic reaction. First, for all values of D > 0 and k ≥ 0, we prove the existence of a family of propagating fronts (or travelling waves) describing the advance of the reaction. In particular, in the quadratic case k = 0, we recover the results of Billingham and Needham [BN]. Then, if D is close to 1 and k is sufficiently small, we prove using energy functionals that these propagating fronts are stable against small perturbations in exponentially weighted Sobolev spaces. This extends to our system part of the stability results which are known for the scalar Fisher equation. 2

Stability of convective patterns in reaction fronts: a comparison of three models.

Autocatalytic reaction fronts generate density gradients that may lead to convection. Fronts propagating in vertical tubes can be flat, axisymmetric, or nonaxisymmetric, depending on the diameter of the tube. In this paper, we study the transitions to convection as well as the stability of different types of fronts. We analyze the stability of the convective reaction fronts using three differen...

Biscale chaos in propagating fronts.

The propagating chemical fronts found in cubic autocatalytic reactiondiffusion processes are studied. Simulations of the reaction-diffusion equation near to and far from the onset of the front instability are performed and the structure and dynamics of chemical fronts are studied. Qualitatively different front dynamics are observed in these two regimes. Close to onset the front dynamics can be ...

Quadratic and Cubic Reaction–Diffusion Fronts*

Robert Luther’s student, Herr cand. It was May 21, 1906, at the Main Meeting of the Deutsche Bunsengesellschaft für Angewandte Physikalische Chemie held in Dresden, Germany. Luther, who was Director of the Physical Chemistry Labo...

Interaction between buoyancy and diffusion-driven instabilities of propagating autocatalytic reaction fronts. II. Nonlinear simulations.

The nonlinear dynamics resulting from the interplay between diffusive and buoyancy-driven Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities of autocatalytic traveling fronts are analyzed numerically for fronts ascending or descending in the gravity field and for various values of the relevant parameters, the Rayleigh numbers R(a) and R(b) of the reactant A and autocatalytic product B, respectively, and the ra...

Propagating waves of self-assembly in organosilane monolayers.

Wavefronts associated with reaction-diffusion and self-assembly processes are ubiquitous in the natural world. For example, propagating fronts arise in crystallization and diverse other thermodynamic ordering processes, in polymerization fronts involved in cell movement and division, as well as in the competitive social interactions and population dynamics of animals at much larger scales. Alth...
